Context
Kindle users often take breaks between reading sessions, during which they might lose track of the book’s storyline, themes, or key highlights. This disrupts their reading experience, causing friction when they resume reading after a break.
Hypothesis
By providing a personalized recap of what a reader has previously read, incorporating highlights and other reading behavior, we can improve reader engagement and make it easier for them to re-enter the story or content, ultimately increasing satisfaction and time spent reading.
What can we learn from competitors?
Good Reads
Users often write reviews or summarize their books for reference. However, this requires manual effort.
Audible
Audible’s bookmarks and chapter summaries allow listeners to track their progress but do not dynamically adjust based on user behavior.
These apps create summarized content for articles but lack personalized interaction based on user engagement.
User Cohorts
Frequent Readers
Consume books regularly and return quickly after a break
Casual Readers
May take longer breaks due to busy schedules or other interests.
Highlight Enthusiasts
Mark passages to revisit later, often with deep focus on comprehension.
User Painpoints
What are the pain points that these users need addressed?
Difficulty remembering key themes, especially after long gaps.
Frustration from manually rereading parts of the book for context.
Lack of integration between highlighted content and the overall storyline.
User Journey
Start Reading
User selects a book and starts reading
Highlight Passages
User marks important parts of the text
Takes a Break
User leaves the book, sometimes for days or weeks.
Returns to Reading
User manually skims to recall the storyline, often leading to frustration.
Problem Statement
Kindle lacks a feature that helps readers re-engage with their books efficiently after breaks, resulting in user frustration and reduced engagement.
Goal Statement
To introduce a “Personalized Recap” feature in Kindle that dynamically provides a summary based on:
Reading history (chapters covered).
Highlights made by the reader.
Duration of the break.
Feature Prioritization and MVP Definition
High Priority (MVP):
Generate dynamic recaps based on chapters read and break duration.
Integrate user highlights into the recap.
Provide an optional “Recap” button when resuming a book.
Future Enhancements:
Natural language summaries for highlights.
Integration with Alexa for audio recaps.
Advanced recommendations based on skipped sections.

Feature Prioritization and MVP Definition
How it’s going to be built:
Data Collection: Use reading history and highlight data from existing Kindle logs.
Break Analysis: Determine the duration of inactivity for each book.
Recap Generation:
Short Breaks: Provide a summary of the last 2–3 pages read.
Long Breaks: Generate chapter-wise recaps and integrate key highlights.
AI-Powered Summaries: Use NLP models to synthesize user highlights into context-rich summaries.
Integration: Add a “Recap” button to the book’s homepage and as a pop-up after long breaks.
Risks and Tradeoffs
Risk: Misinterpretation of highlights could lead to irrelevant summaries.
Tradeoff: Detailed recaps might increase load times slightly.
Mitigation: Allow users to toggle the feature on/off or adjust the detail level.
Measuring Success
Increased time spent reading on Kindle after breaks.
Reduction in the number of abandoned books (measured by completion rates).
User feedback scores for the recap feature (target: >80% satisfaction).
Launch and GTM Strategy
Beta Testing: Roll out to a subset of Kindle Unlimited users for feedback.
Promotions: Showcase the feature in Kindle’s app updates and Amazon marketing emails.
Education: Short tutorial videos and tooltips highlighting the “Recap” feature.
Final Thoughts
This feature aligns with Amazon’s mission to enhance customer satisfaction through innovation. It not only improves user experience but also deepens engagement with Kindle, potentially boosting book sales and Kindle Unlimited subscriptions.
